About Independence Trust

Whether you experience difficulties personally, are supporting a loved one who does, or are part of a community that is affected, we are here to help you.

Independence Trust was formed when GDAS (Gloucestershire Drug and Alcohol Service), GAMH (Gloucestershire Association of Mental Health), and Share Young People's Counselling Service merged.

We have a particular approach to the things we do:

  • We welcome everyone on their own terms – we know how tough it is to decide to seek help. While we challenge people to make changes in their lives, our support is not unconditional.
  • We are a local charity so we stay close to those who use our services, the communities we serve and our funders. It also means that decisions are made by people who immediately see the impact that those decisions have.
  • We work together with other local organizations and services to find better solutions for the people who ask for our help.
  • We provide services locally because we want to be sure that help is there for anyone and everyone who needs it.
  • Volunteers are key to our work. They keep us in direct contact with the communities we serve and are part of our commitment to being a local provider of services. Volunteering makes communities stronger.
  • Our support involves talking in a safe environment with another human being without being judged. This is often the first step towards recovery and positive change.

We share the belief that wherever possible our clients should be encouraged and supported to lead independent fulfilled lives free from prejudice and ignorance. That is the reason for having independence in our name.

Independence Trust is a Gloucestershire Charity. We support individuals, families, and communities with concerns about mental health, alcohol or drugs. We help people to build self esteem and confidence, so that they can take more control of their lives, become more independent and realise their potential.
